This article deals with the potential side effects of soy milk for those people who may be concerned or are actually experiencing certain symptoms.
A lot of people are not able to consume dairy products and so look for alternatives to add to their diet. Soy milk has emerged as a replacement to regular, pasteurized milk and its potential protein benefits has made it extremely popular.
However, as with any food or drink we consume (even water), a small percentage of the population will not be able to tolerate it. Soy milk side effects are very real for those that suffer them, but it is important to keep the figures in perspective. Less than 0.5% of people consuming soy milk or soy products will notice any side effects. And for the vast majority of them, the symptoms they experience will usually be mild and short-lived.
Digestive Problems
One of the most common side effects to drinking soy milk includes an upset stomach and various digestive problems such as diarrhea or constipation. If this is the case it may be that you are simply consuming too much. Try cutting back on your intake and see if your symptoms go away.
Thyroid Function
Soy contains isoflavones and goitrogens that have the potential to reduce the function of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is responsible for producing the thyroid hormone which keeps the body’s muscles, brain and heart in good working order. Goitrogens can cause hypothyroidism and goiters.
Other possible side effects include a risk of bladder cancer and a worsening condition of kidney stones. Naturally you should consult with your doctor or health care specialist if you have any concerns. These are worse case scenarios and will only affect a tiny percentage of the population.
Conclusion
I have undertaken quite a deal of research regarding soy milk dangers and its associated side effects. My understanding is now that I believe soy milk to be perfectly suitable and beneficial to the majority of people, especially those who are allergic or intolerant to dairy milk.
Yes there are chances of developing side effects but these seem to occur more in people who consume too much soy milk on a daily basis.
